THANKSGIVING 2020

The Porter family has celebrated the Thanksgiving Holiday after my bride and myself were married back in 1968 and most families that I know have celebrated the holiday as far back as I can remember.

The pictures that I took of our Thanksgiving Holidays after the digital age came into its own, was stored on different personal computers hard drives of which I lost a few of them not backed up and those hard drives that survived, eventually ended up on back-up storage devices; floppy disk drive, USB flash drive, CDs, DVDs and of late, external hard drive devices.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING

A brief history of our Thanksgiving Holiday (United States) from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:  Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November.  It has officially been an annual tradition since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.  As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season. The event that some Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, and was attended by 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.  The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought, though the 1621 events were likely not a religious observation.

THANKSGIVING BAKED TURKEY CIRCA. 1978

Below is one of the earliest pixs I have located of my brides baked turkey in 1978 surrounded by frosted grapes, however she baked them back in the late 60s and early 1970s too.

Below is a pix which might have been her first baked turkey taken with a Polaroid camera and scanned which definitely goes way back into the early 1970s for sure:

According to the file tag, this was the first turkey that my bride baked.  The picture quality is very poor but I can make out a pan of her cornbread dressing, corn on the cob, deviled eggs, potato salad, maybe a fresh apple cake since that one was my favorite at the time.  Cranberry sauce is a must for turkey and see a plate of sliced cranberry sauce.  Can't make out what type of bread that is on the lower left in the pix.

Ok, I got side tracked just a little there, but you know I do that regularly if you have read any of my short stories.  It is just my MO aka Modus Operandi.

BACK TO THANKSGIVING 2020 & COVID-19

This Thanksgiving with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) still in full swing and increasing in intensity, our Demoncratic Governor has reinforced restrictions to limit gatherings to ten (10) people which will no doubt help, however the idiots that do not follow personal safety precautions as recommended by CDC (Center For Disease Control And Prevention) that are out in the general public, it is no wonder the Coronavirus continues to rapidly spread.

It is my humble opinion that God has allowed this pestilence to wake up America to get back on a spiritual track, but I personally don't see it happening.  Morally, America has passed the point of no return with the ungodly agendas that are allowed and promoted such as the murder of innocent unborn babies (abortion), homosexual marriages, etc., which is an abomination and sin in the sight of God!  Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior is the only answer for the survival of America and not the "hot air" politicians of both parties in our Local, State and Federal Government!

Read my quote of the decade page for additional information why America is on a death spiral.

TABLE IS SET

Our meal consisted of the following: Cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, deep fried turkey, cranberry chutney, collard greens and ham hocks, yellow corn, deviled eggs, fried cornbread, Hawaiian rolls, chicken and dumplings, potato salad, green bean casserole, sweet potato soufflé and earthquake cake.

I did as much prep work as possible the day before Thanksgiving and only had to deep fry the turkey, complete the chicken and dumplings, place the cornbread dressing in the oven and finish the giblet gravy along with bringing the collard greens and yellow corn up to temperature.  My bride basically did the deviled eggs by herself and helped with the potato salad.

A couple packages of venison "back straps" aka loin straps were broiled in the oven for the three Grandboys.  Calling Travis and Trevor Huneycutt boys is akin to calling an alligator a lizard....grin if you must, because I certainly am!

A FEW PIXS TAKEN

Trevor Lane Huneycutt, one of our East Coast Grandboys.

Travis Lee Huneycutt, our oldest Grandson.

Xander McKnight Gonzales, our youngest East Coast Grandson, however he was born in Texas!

Lily Danielle Gonzales, our only Grand Daughter and what a "baby doll" for sure.

Another pix of Miss Lily and Aunt Laura.

Laura Lee Anne Porter

Lisa Dianne Gonzales, our youngest Daughter.

Joyce Ann Porter aka "my bride", we will soon be married 53 years!

Lisa and her family were one hour late.  We normally have our Thanksgiving dinner aka lunch at 1:00 PM, but moved it up to 12 Noon so Trevor could attend since he had to be at work in Pinehurst, NC at 2:30 PM.

It would have been great to have our West Coast Family with us, Bill, Nichol, Jake and Will!

AFTERMATH

Above is pix of the dishes, pots and pans after yours truly did some scrubbing with the hands; didn't use the dish washer this time.

There were plenty of left overs and glad several took what they wanted home with them.  Both our refrigerators are still packed to the brim with regular things and left overs.

In conclusion, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving and thankful for each and every day that our Lord allows.  Every day of the week should be a day of Thanksgiving and give God the Praise, Honor and Glory through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior in all things!

Two of the Greatest Ships that ever Sailed; Friendship and Fellowship!  The Sea of Life was calm today with enough prevailing winds to move us forward toward our ultimate and final journey that awaits us all!
