I noticed a week or two before the hard drive finally crashed, it was taking longer boot up time and an unusual amount of time to shut down.  Windows tried an automatic repair, but there was a disk error that apparently couldn't be repaired by Windows OS.

I have two auxiliary back up systems and had most of my stuff prior backed up before the crash, however I had some antiquated programs going back to 2003 which included Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, PhotoShopCS2 and Outlook 2010 and as stated antiquated.

I ordered another HP Pavilion with the same basic processor, Intel Core I5 and the same amount of ram.

After setting up the pc, it didn't take long to realized that the current Microsoft programs are a money pit, wanting you to subscribe to the programs versus purchasing them outright as in the "ole days."  Adobe jumped on the bandwagon long before Microsoft to try and prevent "stealing" their programs, etc.

It appeared that Microsoft Office 365 did all they could to keep some of my antiquated programs from working even with a legal code key and I deleted all I could off the hard drive pertaining to Microsoft Office 365 which seemed to solve the issue, although I had to enable some extensions to get a few of the programs working properly without a incompatibility issue notice generated by Microsoft Office 365 and directing you to subscribe to a monthly subscription at a cost.

Norton 360 software is another money pit.  Norton attempts to have you purchase additional functions which should be standard on their Norton 360 software.  When the one (1) year subscription expires, I will probably purchase Webroot software.

I kept the older keyboard which is much better than the Reader's Digest type keyboard that came with the HP Pavilion.

I also kept the Altec Lansing speakers and did not use the HP speakers.

NEW HP DESKTOP AND MONITOR

All the clutter on my desk is very evident trying to get all the programs and back-up files installed and was a nightmare for sure. 

I enlisted the help of our son Bill, Jr. via telephone, who lives in California and is a tech geek for sure.  Bill, Jr. retired from the US Navy in 2008 as a Master Chief in Electronics and is currently a defense contractor.

The main thing I don't like about this HP Pavilion is the cheesy vertical DVD/CD drive and the Windows 11 operating system which is quite different from the ole Windows 8.1 I used after the XP Pro operating system.

All the programs I was using, except a few (audio editing) are back operational and adding back-up files to the hard drive as needed.

Personally, I do not need the One Drive Cloud backup and disabled it since the HP comes with only 5GB of storage space and after that, you pay, whereas I have a total of three (3) back up auxiliary drives! 

I am using an older Outlook 2010 for my mail and had to enlist the help of a Windstream on line Tech to get it set back up.  I didn't have all the required information backed up to do it myself.

I am continuing to use the obsolete Microsoft FrontPage 2003, but there are some differences and I could have been using the 2007 version, but not sure.  Anyway, I got a few things to relearn concerning creating a new page to the website of which I am doing right now, more or less, testing that aspect of the FrontPage 2003 which seems to be working OK if I can stay on board....grin if you must!

My ole Canon 30D EOS utilities disk, I could not locate as yet, but it is around here somewhere.

On the older HP Pavilion desktop, when I uploaded pixs from my camera or any type memory card, a folder was automatically created by date and defaulted to My Pictures, whereas Windows 11 doesn't do it.  I will try and figure that out later.

OLD PC READY FOR LANDFILL

Before depositing the old HP Pavilion desktop into the landfill, I basically destroyed the hard drive and removed the RAM which is 12 Gigabytes; one 8 and the other 4 Gigabytes and I believe is compatible with the current HP Pavilion mother board.

Below a few pixs taken:

The hard drive was removed from pc cabinet, bottom left in the above pix.

I used a flathead screwdriver tip to heavily scratch the storage disk aka platter and destroyed the head which is attached to the arm.

Unless you have a set of pc tools, it would be very hard to remove the cover plate from the hard drive since the screws are very small and need the proper size of screwdriver tips (star or spline shaped).

I saved the 12 Megabytes of ram, pix below:

Since I do not do any gaming, the current 8 Megabytes of ram in the new pc will work fine.

I might remove and keep one of the fans to use in my sausage smoker along with the power supply.
